TV Backlight Failure: Causes, Signs and Repair Options

Anatomy of Backlight
Inside LCD panel, behind diffuser sheets, there are 3-12 LED strips, each with 6-12 LEDs in series. Driver board boosts 24V to 120-200V. If one LED opens, whole strip goes dark, TV detects overvoltage and shuts off backlight to protect. Symptom: sound stays, picture disappears after 2 seconds.
Signs of Backlight Failure
Flashlight test positive, screen flickers, dark patches top/bottom, pink hue, TV clicks off after logo, power LED stays on. In TCL, Vitron, Skyworth, Visions, Mika brands, LEDs turn blue before dying – white becomes purplish.

Repair Options – Why We Replace Full Set
Replacing single LED is temporary – others are aged equally. We replace full set with new aluminium PCB strips, apply thermal tape, and mod driver current down 15% via resistor or service menu (Samsung: Mute 1 8 2 Power, LG: Menu 1147). DIY Warning
Opening panel without suction cups cracks screen. Diffuser sheets must be kept dust-free and in order. Do not touch LEDs with bare fingers – oil causes hotspots. Leave to technicians with ESD mats.
Prevention
Lower backlight to 70, use Eco mode, ensure ventilation, use stabilizer, turn off when not watching. For hotels, we set hospitality mode backlight limit.
